* All curriculum is laid out on the shelves in different areas of the classroom, each item is called a job and below is a description of what the children learn in each area.
Language
Children develop and learn: pre-reading skills, pattering, classifying familiar objects, visual discrimination, use of sand paper letters, peer comunication skills, verbal instructions, role-playing with puppets, and the labeling of the environment. All of these skills are a precursor to written language and the ability to read. Jobs include: worksheets, journals, puzzles, shape tracing, letter boxes, movable alphabet, zoophonics & object to letter matching.
Practical Life
This area develops the skills needed in every day life and helps the children learn how to follow complex steps for each job. We devote a whole classroom to this area in the pre-k class. Children develop and learn: experience in refinement of motor skills, establish logical thought processing, sequential thinking skills, reinforcement of visual and motor tracking from left to right , care of person and environment, grace and courtesy, control of movement, order in thoughts, routines, procedures, schedules, coordination, concern, independence and self-confidence. Jobs include: Washing, pouring, cutting, spooning, juicing, tweezing, painting, gluing, play dough, etc.
Natural Life
This area changes monthly with various themes. Some include, botany, insects, dinosaurs, reptiles, water, continents, and seasons.
Geography
Children develop and learn: About the different continents, flags that represent each country, the United States, land forms and our oceans. Jobs include: land form manipulatives, flag matching, continent & state puzzles.
Math
Children develop and learn: linear and skip counting, one to one correspondence, classifying and relationships with numbers, understanding quantity and symbol, use and interpretation of mathematical terminologly, introduction to the four basic operations of mathematics, development of abstract strategies, cooperation and independence. Jobs include: use of beads, object to number matching, geometric shapes, worksheets, number rods and money.
Sensorial
Children develop and learn: order, coordination, concentration, independence, an eye for detail, the ability to classify, use of both sides of the brain, make comparisons and evaluations and come to logical conclusions. Jobs include: smell jars, sound cyliners & bells, shape & size sorting & geometric shape boxes.
